Homemade Pita Bread – This is one of the easiest recipes. This Homemade Pita bread tastes really good. You can have these as pita pockets or wraps or sandwich. you can make Pita chips also and add them to salads. Pita chips taste really good with hummus and make a yummy healthy appetizer or snack.
we made pita bread wraps. Spread a generous amount of hummus on pita bread. top it with Tahini sauce, add salad and Falafel. Followed by a spoon of Tzatziki sauce and green chili garlic dip.
There are many dishes which we assume must be difficult to make at home and we end up buying them. Homemade Pita bread is definitely one of them. Ever since I have started making them at home I have not bought them. we can make these in large quantity also as there is not much effort involved.
You can either bake these Pita bread or use the stovetop method. I have discussed both of them in detail below.
How to make Homemade Pita Bread
preparation time: 10 minutes to knead the dough + 15 minutes to roll the dough
resting time: 7-8 minutes for yeast to dissolve + 2 hours for the dough to rise
cooking time: around 15 minutes ( if you bake these then one round takes around 5 minutes)
makes 12 Pita Bread
Ingredients:
2 cups maida/ plain flour/ all purpose flour
2 tsp salt
1 tbsp olive oil
1 cup of warm water
2 tsp instant yeast
¼- ½ cup plain flour for kneading and dusting
Note: you can use half plain flour and half whole wheat flour also.
To make Homemade Pita Bread
Take warm water in a bowl and add yeast to it. let it sit for 7-8 minutes till yeast is dissolved completely in water. Take flour in a wide thali or bowl. add salt, olive oil and water-yeast mixture to it.
when you mix it, you get a very sticky dough. Sprinkle a little plain flour on the surface and start working on the dough. you might have to use more plain flour while kneading the dough. After 10 minutes you will get a smooth and elastic dough.
In a bowl spread some drops of olive oil. Put the dough in it and then turn it over so that whole surface of the dough is greased. Cover the bowl and let it rest in a warm place. After 1½ or 2 hours dough will almost double in size.
Punch the dough. take it out on a clean surface or thali. Sprinkle a little plain flour if needed and smooth the dough. Make equal sized balls. I got around 12 dough balls. If you want a thicker pita bread you can make 10 balls.
roll out the dough to the desired size. if you are using the stovetop method you can roll and cook side by side. if you are baking these roll a batch first and while they are baking roll out the next batch.
for the stovetop method
Warm a tava or skillet. Place the pita bread on warm skillet one at a time. cook it bubbles appear. now flip the pita and cook the other side for a minute. Now flip again and cook. Pita will start to rise now. If it doesn’t fluff up entirely press with a cloth or spoon.
Make all pitas in the same way. Serve hot. To store keep in a casserole or an airtight box.
for oven method:
Preheat the oven to 200° C. Roll out the pita bread in the same way. Place as many pitas as you can adjust on the baking sheet. I baked 4 pita bread in one go. These take around 5 minutes to bake. Serve hot. To store keep in a casserole or an airtight box.
which is the better way to make Pita Bread
In the stovetop method, the Pita bread that we get is soft and fluffy. which is good for wraps.
While baking in the oven they get a little hard. so they are perfect for making pita pockets. So, in the end, it depends on how you want to use it
