Suji Uttapam or Savory Semolina Pancakes – You are tired and kids are screaming for food. You do not have anything ready and you don’t want to feed them fast food. I don’t know about you but this happens a lot to me.
What do you do in such circumstances? Wish for a genie? (no use, I have tried that before). There is a saying “where there is a will there is a way”. Well here is the way.
If I have to make a list of my favorite dishes that can be prepared in a jiffy these pancakes will surely top the list. Suji Uttapam or Semolina Pancake is a healthy version of a traditional South Indian recipe eaten with relish in India.
Now, what makes this recipe so special is that you can sneak in lots of vegetables in this recipe. If your kids are like mine who get queasy just by watching me cut cabbage then this is the recipe for you.
Try it and I am sure you will love this healthy recipe.
Semolina Pancakes (Suji Uttapam)
For the pancakes(makes 6):
2 cups semolina (suji)
1 cup curd(yogurt)
½ tsp red chili powder
Salt to taste
1 green chili chopped
1 tsp grated ginger
½ cup diced tomato and capsicum
½ cup grated onions, carrots, and cabbage
oil for cooking
Mix all the ingredients except oil and make a batter of dropping consistency using water. Heat a non-stick pan and grease it lightly with oil. Spread a layer of batter on the pan to make a pancake of 3-4 mm thickness. Spread a little oil around the pancake to keep it from sticking to the pan. Cook it over a slow flame until the base is golden brown. Turn over to cook the other side. Remove from the pan and serve hot. Repeat with the remaining batter to make five more pancakes.

Can this sent to school for snack time? won’t it become too dry by then? can we spread ketchup over it?
I’m browsing your blog because I’ve run out of ideas for my son’s snack box. going to try this tomorrow.
Nidhi
Hello, Janaki. No, it doesn’t become too dry. If you find it dry wrap it in a foil on cooling down and then pack for lunch box. Ketchup will make it soggy.

Hi Nidhi,
Love to see this ideas ………….i will try it for my little kid ,i just want to confirm are you using chopped vegetable (like ;tomato, onion etc) or we have to mash it by machine & also you mentioned curd we need to mix with mixture………………….you are using also using kacchi suji, so can u tell me this is good for kids to eat this
Nidhi
Hi Nimmi. Yes I am using chopped vegetables( not mashed). I am using raw suji but it gets cooked on the tawa. if you want you can lightly roast suji but raw is also fine.
How old is your child? I have been giving my kids this Uttapam 2.5-3 years onwards 🙂

Hi Nidhi,
I am new to this website and just love the recipes on your website. I have tried carrot truffles, bread pancakes, coconut burfi with gulkand.. They were a huge hit at home and all loved them.
I love the method (procedure with pics) with which you explain the recipes.
It would be great if you could post new healthy recipes for kids.
I have a doubt in the Suji uttapam recipe as to which suji do you use here and do you dry fry it before using in the batter?
TIA
Nidhi
Thanks for your kind words Manjushree. Will post some new healthy recipes soon:-)
IN suji Uttapam Suji is not dry roasted. It is used as it is. Regular Suji/rava that we get in the grocery store.

Hi tried this though the taste was awsome I was unable to turn properly ..insense it was too brittle? What could have gone wrong ?
Nidhi
Mixture should be a little thick. Wait for some time to let uttapam cook on one side. Then turn it. Add less water to batter next time. vegetables should also be chopped finely. Hope that helps.

Thank you. Cooking food is the easy part, getting kids to eat that is the difficult one;-). This surely helps.
